Why We Launched UD Tech Trek
By Michelle Boas, Executive Director, Upper Dublin Education Foundation
Parenting in the digital age is one of today’s most pressing challenges. Technology shapes so much of our children’s lives, from how they learn and connect with friends to how they explore the world around them. While these tools offer incredible opportunities, they also raise important questions and concerns: How much screen time is too much? What are the risks of social media? How can we set boundaries that reflect our family’s values while respecting our child’s growing independence?
At the Upper Dublin Education Foundation, we hear these questions from parents, educators, and community members every day. Families are eager for trusted, practical guidance to help them navigate the fast-changing digital landscape. That’s why we created UD Tech Trek, a new resource hub designed to support Upper Dublin families as they raise kids in today’s online world.
Grounded in Research, Shaped by Our Community
UD Tech Trek was built in collaboration with experts in digital wellness and child development, as well as local parents and community leaders who brought real-world insight to the project. The guidance you’ll find on the site draws from the work of trusted voices like Dr. Devorah Heitner, Jonathan Haidt, the American Academy of Pediatrics, and the Organization for Social Media Safety.
Importantly, this resource focuses on out-of-school digital use—the hours kids spend on devices outside of classroom instruction. For families looking for school-specific policy information, UDSD’s School Board Policy 237 as well as building-level policies are available through the site.
A Tool to Help Families Lead with Confidence
Our goal is not to prescribe one “right” way to parent in the digital age, but to empower families with the tools, research, and language they need to make informed choices that align with their values. Every child is different. Every family is different. But when families have clear, trustworthy information, they can approach technology with greater confidence and less stress.
Looking Ahead
UD Tech Trek is just the beginning. We hope it will spark conversations in living rooms, car rides, and community spaces across Upper Dublin. Parenting is never simple, and none of us can do it alone. But with resources like Tech Trek, we can walk this journey together, making thoughtful choices for the kids who are growing up in this complex, connected world.
We invite you to explore the site, share it with other families, and let us know how it’s helping in your home. Let’s ensure technology is a tool that supports, not hinders, our children’s growth, focus and well-being.
